A Review of The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying
The writing team of Jim Schollmeyer and Ted Leeson has done it again. The same pair that authored Fly Tier's Benchside Reference and Tying Emergers has now produced a superior introductory tome, appropriately titled The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying. What makes this book unique is its format. The body of the work features pages split in half. The top section shows a bevy of fly patterns in step-by-step mode. In each step at the top of the page, the reader is referred to one of the bottom pages, where the particular tying method is explained in great depth. It is a format that works extremely well to instruct. The photography is full color and top shelf, exactly what we have come to expect from this talented and dedicated duo. The coverage of trout flies is very broad, encompassing 18 nymphs, 2 wets, 6 streamers, 8 emergers, 14 dries, and 5 terrestrials. It is, quite simply, the finest introductory tying manual available.
