Little Juniata River Report

Low summertime flows make the fishing challenging.  Ants, beetles, wet ants and green weenies would be on my agenda.

Penns Creek Report

Since I was in Penn's Valley on Sunday, 5 November, on other business, I drove to Coburn to take a look at Penn's Creek. I pretty much expected to see the water roiled and turbid, but it was green and flowing at very fishable levels. Penn's Creek is in fine shape for a late season trip before the weather gets truly cold. Little spawning takes place in Penn's Creek, so chasing fish off redds is much less a consideration than on Spring or Fishing Creeks.

It is a little late in the season to see much hatching, but there may be a few stray Baetis or Slate Drakes around. If a fish rises for the next few months, however, it is probable that midges are the cause. Your best bet for moving fish would be a deeply drifted nymph. A Perla (Golden) Stone has always been a top choice for taking fish on this big limestoner, and with the increased flow, #8 or #10 flies should work well. Streamers should get time as well.

Spring Creek Report

Summertime flows are ideal for the morning #24 trico spinner fall.

Ants, beetles and tan caddis will be good choices for the afternoon and evening  fishing.

Subsurface suggestions would include wet ants, green weenies, zebra midges, sowbus and scuds.
